Cycline3 Rocketry - The Path to Level 2
When I first decided to shoot for my NAR Level 1 Certification, I don't think I realized just what is involved. You can't say that about Level 2.
Keeping true to form, I am building a 7.5' custom rocket designed to fly a miniDV camcorder as payload. Instead of the heavy Giant Leap phenolic tubes, I am building the L2 bird with PML Quantum plastic airframe. Fins are G10 fiberglass instead of plywood. This much larger rocket won't weigh a great deal more than my level 1 girl. I am estimating the final weight with the camera ready for a Level 2 launch at 8lbs. Sans payload maybe as little as 5 or 6 lbs. I guess it all adds up when it's finished.

Here is the 54MM motor tube. It's a quick switch mount capable of flying 29MM, 38MM or 54MM motors. The normal mount calls for a single strap to the piston. I built this mount with TWO heavy nylon straps. I also added the metal eyelets in case the nylon ever burns in two and needs replaced. You don't want to try this after the fin can is built. Lots of epoxy.

Here is the payload section coming together. The eyelets are stainless steel - much harder than standard PML issue - and cost $3.00 a piece. Knowing they won't break is worth every penny. When I say these are hard, I mean it.
The payload bay will house the camera and nose cone weight on large motor flights. I don't want the epoxy joint sliding pulling apart from the slick plastic, so I added a number of screws to hold the coupling tube in the airframe. Leave space for your rail - don't run them all the way around.
